What is a gallery? A museum?
It is, of course, easiest to explain in art terms, but the concept may be applied to all media. A gallery is a group of images that are all linked to from one page. This page usually has thumbnails to help you select which image you wish to view at full size. A museum contains links to many galleries. These links may or may not have thumbnails. Often the links on museum pages are just text descriptions of the gallery.

Again, this concept does not necessarily apply exclusively to art. For music, the gallery may be the works of one musician, and a museum may be links to many different musicians. Or a gallery could be one album of that musician and a museum could be links to every album of that musician.

Downloading a gallery
First, make sure that you are connected to the internet. Second, set the page type to "Gallery" and not "Museum". Now, In the text field labeled "Address", enter the URL of the gallery. After you have completed that step, hit either the "return" key, "enter" key, or the "go!" button.

At this point, "downloading page..." should be displayed in the lower left part of the iMeMiner window. The lower left will then display "extracting links..." Once the galleries have been extracted from the museum page they will be displayed in the left pane. Galleries which have been previously downloaded will be greyed out. Even though these galleries are grey, you may still download them. Initially none of the galleries will be selected. You must select which galleries you wish to download by clicking on their check box. When you have selected every gallery you wish to download, click on the "go!" button.

View thumbnails - Selects the thumbnails pane for viewing.

View image - Views a large version of the selected image in the image pane.

View previous image - Selects the previous image for viewing.

View next image - Selects the previous image for viewing.

View most recent image - Selects the most recent image for viewing. If this menu item is selected then the selected image will change as images are downloaded.

Gallery Menu

Select all galleries - Selects the checkbox for every gallery link downloaded.

Deselect all galleries - Deselects the checkbox for every gallery link downloaded.

Select hilighted galleries - Hilighted galleries appear in dark blue. You hilight galleries by clicking on them. Multiple galleries may be hilighted. This menu item selects the checkbox for every hilighted gallery.

Deselect hilighted galleries - Deselects the checkbox for every hilighted gallery

Move hilighted to top of list - Moves hilighted galleries to the top of the list, flipping them with the previous top of the list galleries.

Move hilighted to bottom of list - Moves hilighted galleries to the bottom of the list, flipping them with the previous bottom of the list galleries.

Intelligent sort - When you download galleries, these gallery links are broken down into their word components. It is assumed that you prefer to download the galleries with these words in their title. This function sorts the galleries by which have the most preferred keywords in their title.

Remove repeated galleries - Some museums list galleries more than once. This removes the repeats. Note, this function can be pretty slow (geometrically) the larger the list is.

Remove galleries previously visited - Removes all galleries which have been previously downloaded.

Remove unselected galleries - Removes all galleries which do not have their checkbox selected.

Skip media - skips to the next media in the download chain.

Skip gallery - skips to the next gallery in the download chain.

Selecting the media type to download
iMeMiner is built to download any type of media from the internet. To select which type of media you would like to download, open the preferences panel by selecting "Preferences..." from the File menu. When the panel is opened you may select general media categories ("images", "video", etc.) or you may enter your own file suffixes.

Helpful tips

Check boxes may be checked by clicking on the box, or by pressing the space bar while item is selected in dark blue.

Hitting the enter key after typing the URL in the address field causes the links to be extracted if it is a museum page, the images to be downloaded if it is a gallery page.

OSX tip - When quitting, be sure to use the quit option under the "File" menu not the"iMeMiner" menu.

Viewing Images - These actions will let you view an image: hitting Command-i in combination, double clicking on a thumbnail, clicking on image tab.

Answers to some questions

Why is the media not being downloaded from certain pages? There are many possibilities why this may be happening. There may be an error in downloading and the resources may be deleted. It could be that the links on a gallery page do not link directly to the media, rather they link to an HTML page. In that case, iMeMiner will not be able to detect the media and will not download.

A web page may be in frames. If a web page uses frames, iMeMiner will not be able to extract the links properly. If this is the case, try right-clicking on the frame (control-click for Mac users) and selecting "Open frame in new window". This should give you the true URL for the page.

Why did iMeMiner not download all of the media? Some resources may not be downloaded properly (slow website, file not found, etc.) these resources will be skipped.

Known bugs
There are no known bugs that affect the functionality of iMeMiner. The only known bugs at this point are minor quirks which affect the way the program displays its components. If you have any bugs to report, please do so at this email address: bugs@geneffects.com
